Buen Camino 7: Alburque : inside and out.
Alburque come in all shapes and sizes. There are Private and Municipal - and the quality is quite variable in either. The newer or renovated ones will often have individual lights and a socket for charging phones for each bunk. Most have double bunks with anything from 2 to 30 sets in a room. A parish alb. I stayed in had gym mats on the floor - but a wonderful shared meal after the pilgrim mass and blessing in the historical church. Prices also vary - so far I have had: by donation, 5, 6.5 , 8 and 10 Euro per night. Even had a swimming pool at one!

It is amazing how well you sleep in the alburques. After a day's walking and the menu del dia with vino tinto I found I did not hear a thing once my head hit the pillow.
ReplyDeleteAngela and I found the shared meals in alburques (where these were available) to be a bit mixed, but the wonderful company of fellow walkers always made up for any deficiencies in the food quality. We have never forgotten sitting down to eat with four French speakers, and an Austrian who spoke only German, and using our limited Spanish to communicate with those of the French who had some Spanish (but not English) in their language repertoire.
ReplyDeleteHope you and Christine are enjoying whichever alburque you are staying in Leon!
ReplyDeleteHa ha Michael! Love from Christine
DeleteNot sure if I would get any sleep sharing with so many people. Bruce would clear the room with his snoring,he is well known. For it :-). they look nice and clean and tidy. Do some people go to Inns or motels if there are such places along the way?.. I can understand the friendship and enjoyment of talking and meeting with fellow walkers at these sleep over places , lots of sharing information and sign language going on I bet.
ReplyDeleteThere are also hotels (hostals) in most villages where you can get own room/bathroom for about 30 Euro ($NZ 40) single.
ReplyDeleteSo interesting to see and good to know!
ReplyDeleteAre any others suffering with blisters Paul. Such a variety of shoes! Maybe your suggestion of start shorter might have been the answer. Hindsight is so valuable and unuseful.
